Many people don’t realize it, but fame sometimes leaves a sour aftertaste. People usually only see the glory and the money that goes with fame, but they don’t see the numerous disadvantages of being a celebrity.
Marshall recently stated that he is fed up with fame.
Maybe much more with everything that goes with fame: pressures, psycho fans, security, very rare spare time.
Many people would argue that Eminem wanted to be famous and that he shouldn’t complain about his life style.
But they seem to ignore that Eminem didn’t expect to get that big. He wanted to have a record deal, like any average rapper:
“All I really wanted was a career in hip-hop. But you’ve got to be careful what you wish for, as it’s almost turning into more of a nightmare than a dream. I miss going to the park and playing basketball.’
Before 1999, the world didn’t care so much about Eminem. When Eminem entered into stardom, he really had no idea of the many pressures the music industry would put on his shoulders. This point is clearly explained in his earlier collaboration with Cypress Hill ‘Rap Superstar’:
‘[Eminem Speaking]
Most people don’t see how much work is really involved
in this rap shit
I didn’t know it
I didn’t see it
I never saw it until i was actually in it
You really gotta be in it
To understand what its like
But you always gotta
People always gotta see your smile
You always gotta put on that fake
You know what i’m sayin
No matter what u just been through…’
Marshall, who raised to fame in less than a year, between 1998 and 1999, had to face so many pressures from his label and also the negative critics from the media. All of a sudden, his privacy and his relatives’ privacy was totally exposed in the tabloids.
When you’re famous, you always have to satisfy your public, no matter what your state of mind actually is.
Moreover, fame also involves a real loss of freedom. Wherever you might be going to, security guards will follow you.
Marshall is known for his simplicity. He didn’t grow up with a golden spoon in his mouth. He perfectly knows the fights and the struggles of life.
“I was never that person that wanted the big cars. I don’t like having security hold my hand to walk out to my mailbox. There’s something inside of me that refuses to believe I can’t walk down he street or be as normal as I want to be.’
How many times has Eminem dreamt to be anonymous in the crowd? He sometimes wishes not to be Eminem or Slim Shady, but just Marshall Mathers, a regular guy who would like to live a normal life.
