An in-depth look at the Detroit hip-hop community is the focus of “Eminem and the Detroit Rap Scene: White Kid in a Black World,†a just-published book by German-born, London-based author Isabelle Esling.
In the 170-page volume, Esling, who started theeminemblog.com in 2005, traces not only the Detroit rapper’s multiplatinum career but also his roots in the Detroit rap world, including his friendship with the late MC Proof as well as associations with underground rappers such as Kaos, Mystro, Awesome Dre, Joe to the D and many others. The book chronicles Eminem’s acceptance in that scene and the influence it had on his musical evolution.
“Eminem and the Detroit Rap Scene†retails for $15 and can be ordered at www.amberbooks.com. A digital version is also available for Kindle and Nook.
Another book about Eminem? My book is different…let me tell you why!
EMINEM AND THE DETROIT RAP SCENE:
“WHITE KID IN A BLACK WORLD OF MUSICâ€
PUBLISHER: AMBER BOOKS www.amberbooks.com
DEAR HIP HOP LOVERS, PRESENT AND FUTURE,
MY BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY ABOUT RAP SUPERMOGUL EMINEM HAS BEEN PUBLISHED BY AMBER BOOKS, I HAVE THE HONOR TO REPORT TO YOU.
BASICALLY, I WAS TRYING TO PUT THIS HIGHLY CONTROVERSIAL LYRICAL GENIUS INTO THE CULTURAL CONTEXT – WHO IS HE AND WHERE DOES HE COME FROM?
TO ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS COULD NOT EVEN BE ATTEMPTED WITHOUT WRITING ABOUT DETROIT – BECAUSE EMINEM CAN NOT BE THOUGHT WITHOUT THE EXISTENCE OF MOTOR CITY. WHILE ON THE ONE HAND HE IS TOTALLY UNIQUE AS AN ARTIST, IT CANNOT BE DENIED THAT DETROIT’S FASCINATING MUSIC SCENE TURNED HIM INTO WHAT HE IS TODAY.
I HAVE BEEN A MUSIC AND BLACK ISSUES JOURNALIST FOR MORE THAN A DECADE, AND MY CHALLENGE WAS TO GET TO THE ESSENCE OF DETROIT SO I WOULD SEE THE REAL CHARACTER OF MARSHALL MATHERS III. THAT MEANT INTERVIEWING, SOMETIMES ARGUING, PERHAPS DISAGREEING AND SPENDING COUNTLESS HOURS WITH THE PEOPLE WHO EM ENCOUNTERED ON HIS WAY TO THE UNDISPUTED THRONE OF RAP.
HOWEVER, THERE ARE STILL NUMEROUS MISCONCEPTIONS, WELL, PERHAPS EVEN LIES OUT AND ABOUT CONCERNING MARSHALL. HE IS SO MUCH MORE THAN HIS IMAGE.
READ MY BOOK AND SOON I THINK YOU WILL BE ABLE TO GET TO KNOW HIM FROM A CLOSER, MORE PERSONAL ANGLE. BE PREPARED TO GET SURPRISED!

National – Amber Communications Group, Inc.’s imprint Colossus Books has published EMINEM and the Detroit Rap Scene: White Kid in a Black Music World.
With never before seen photos and interviews and dedicated to the memory of Big Proof, the founder of D12 and Eminem, Eminem and the Detroit Rap Scene: White Kid in a Black Music World, will take you deep into the heart of the Detroit Ghetto with Eminem long before D12 and the Aftermath with D12.
If you want to understand Eminem, you have to understand where he comes from. You can’t even begin to think about Eminem without mentioning Detroit and the Detroit Rap Scene; Eminem and the Detroit Rap Scene: White Kid in a Black Music World, will bring you to the people, the rappers, the Detroit ghetto, the early years, that inspired him and made him become the person he is now.
I loved Kaos and Mystro, Awesome Dre, Proof, Smiley, Prince Vince, Jo to the D, Detroit Box, AWOL, DmW, a lot of local stuff. Awesome Dre’s ‘ Master Of Philology’, Merciless Amir’s ‘ A Day Without A Rhyme’ and Prince Vince’s ‘ Changes’ were some of my favorites. It made me feel proud to be from the D and made the possibilities of making some noise out of the city seem more realistic. I think I owe a lot to the foundation they all laid, for sure. (Eminem).
Coming from a poor background in Detroit, Eminem struggled hard while being underground and made his own way to become a superstar. His life story is far from being a fairy tale. Bullied at school, experiencing reverse racism on a daily basis, coming from a dysfunctional family with a drug dependant history; Marshall Mathers carried the dream to become a rapper: A dream that was so huge and seemed so foolish, that neither his teachers, his family, nobody…except Big Proof, and then Dr. Dre would take him seriously.
Growing up on the black side of 8 Mile in Detroit, the young boy totally integrated into the culture and focused on the same musical interest as his friends. Eminem also lived on the other side of 8 Mile in Detroit, where he had a bunch of poor white friends as well. Experiencing both sides of the ghetto provided Eminem with treasured bridges to both cultures.
With over 100 million albums sold worldwide, and Academy Awards, Grammy Awards, American Music Awards, ASCAP Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, Gold and Platinum Albums, under his belt, Eminem is one of the best-selling rap artists ever. Discovered by legendary record producer Dr. Dre, Eminem was signed to Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment Record Label in 1999 and he brought along his D12 rap group members and other Detroit rappers, all who would go on to have their own record deals and sell Gold and Platinum Albums.
EMINEM and the Detroit Rap Scene: White Kid in a Black Music World chapters include: “The Detroit Hip Hop Sceneâ€; “The Dirty Dozen – The Story Behind the D12 Groupâ€; “Eminem’s Artistic Evolution”; “White Kid in a Black Music World”.
Eminem and the Detroit Rap Scene: White Kid in a Black Music World was written by Isabelle Esling a graduate of the University of Metz, France, where she studied Liberal Arts and Languages. Ms. Esling has been teaching foreign languages in public and private schools as a German and French teacher.
With a deep passion for writing and music, black music in particular, Ms. Esling discovered Eminem in 2001 and has been enthusiastic about his career and music ever since. In 2003 Gavin Sheridan, a technical writer and professional blogger offered Ms. Esling a position as a contibuting writer for his blog.
In 2005 with Gavins help Ms. Esling started the Eminem blog, www.theeminemblog.com/
where she has internationally discussed and written about Eminem, the Detroit Rap Scene and other Hip Hop related subjects. Isabelle Esling has interviewed many important Detroit artists such as Dina Rae, DJ Butter, Big Proof of D12 and many others. The Eminem Blog has gained her a worldwide audience of readers and she has contributed to numerous Hip Hop websites such as Music Mouth UK, Detroit Rap.com, Michigan Bands and D Townie. In 2011 Ms. Esling was signed to Amber Communications Group, Inc.
Ms. Esling’s challenge was to get to the essence of the Detroit ghetto and its rappers, so that she could find the real character of Marshall Mathers III. That meant interviewing, sometimes arguing, perhaps disagreeing and spending countless hours with the people who Eminem grew up with and encountered on his way to the undisputed throne of rap.
Isabelle Esling was born in Saint Avold, a little French town near the German border. She currently resides in London, England and can be reached for interviews at mathildeesling@yahoo.com .

Bizarre/ This Guy's A Weirdo/ mixtape review
Global rating of the product:4.5 stars
Rufus Johnson aka Bizarre, known as the weirdo of the D12 group, is ready to launch a musical assault in which he will reinforce his weirdness, his lyrical and musical competence. His brand new album is enriched with local Detroit producers participation such as Essman.
The album starts with a hot Bizarre-Young Mase collaboration, in a very hilarious-scurrilous mode in which Bizarre excels. Excellent start as far as I am concerned. Very rhythmic, sick as hell. In addition Young Mase and Bizarre’s voices offer a nice vocal contrast.
The next track, Shade 45 offers a wide range of funny verbal plays on a harsch musical background.
Phee Clouds offers a softer, smoke-clouded perspective. I like its light accents of a weed-smoking Universe in which Bizarre manages to touch the clouds. He’s high, he is wandering in his purple haze world. Nicely done.
I liked Stage Dive less. Bizarre’s voice is too rough on that one. Also the repetitive lyrics make the track a little bit annoying in my opinion.
Welcome to the world of Cocaine in which Bizarre uses numerous instrumental drum-female vocals-keyboard-piano combinations. The song sounds surreal…I like the sensation derivated from the song that it is written with loads of humor…Bizarre is trying his best, but drugs got a hold on him.
I’m So High Tylenal 3, get transported again into a dreamy, colorful Universe made of weed and purple pills.
I Don’t Know What I Did Last Night is a beautiful, evil Bizarre-King Gordy collaboration. Evil deeds under the influence are revealed. Get caught into the suspensul thriller.
The Chino XL Mind Sex produced track offers some good lyrical wordplays. I liked it.
My Mom’s A Stoner is written in a very light tone: very hilarious! The instrumentals are very well chosen, the melody is very entertaining.
The Best I Ever Had is produced by Silent Riot and features MJ Robinson. It mixes, electric guitar, drums, keyboard, violins on a rhythmic rhyming background. Well done, Bizzy!
I enjoyed Bizarre’s Justin Bieber diss in which Bizarre clearly states that he wants to “rape him.” Two heavyweights in rap, Bizarre and King Gordy are teaching the recently ” self proclaimed” rapper how to rap. I enjoyed the wicked collaboration of the Detroit emcees.
Globally speaking, Bizarre made a good solo effort. There is a lot of innovation, in lyrics and sounds. The sick-hilarious style, that is so characteristic to Bizarre is still present, though. I recommend this mixtape to all of you Detroit hip hop lovers.
